The Legacy of Ahmed project that I’ve been managing for the last 18 months has just been awarded ‘runner up’ in the Manchester BME Network awards, heritage category. Partners of the Ahmed Iqbal Ullah Education Trust, MRSN came first. Partners, Ananna also scooped first prize in the Arts section, so a brilliant night all round!

Last Summer, my partner and I worked with friends in our neighbourhood to win a small grant from Manchester City Council. Our collective became known as The Levenshulme Art Action Group. Dismayed by the increasing number of empty or neglected shops along the A6, we created a ‘fantasy’ parade and invited local artists to populate them.

For our own unit Bill and I researched the history of Stockport Road, using Kelly’s Trade directories for 1929 and 1959. We then did an up-to-date survey and produced posters from each period, showing the contrast in businesses and shopping habits.

Special thanks to curator Rebecca Hill (for everything) and Rachel Ramchurn (for kicking all us painters into shape!) .
